| Sustainability Targets |
|
| The Building
Research Establishment has assessed the West Stevenage proposals on
behalf of Hertfordshire County Council and concluded that the package
of measures set out below is capable of reaching their ‘Eco-Homes
Excellent’ Standard throughout the development.
“Hertfordshire
County Council requested BRE review the Sustainability Appraisal
for the West of Stevenage Development against the requirements in
BREEAM and EcoHomes… From the information given, it is estimated
that the dwellings built would achieve an EcoHomes Excellent score.”

A wide range of
sustainability targets has been set through the West Stevenage planning
applications. The key ones are: |
|
- Providing decent homes to meet Hertfordshire’s
housing needs
- Integrating the development with existing infrastructure
and facilities provided by Stevenage town centre, the railway station,
leisure and recreational facilities, and employment areas
- Creating a strong sense of local identity
- Minimise the loss of greenfield land by creating
a high density development
- Bringing back brownfield land into productive
use
- Avoiding any loss of biodiversity
- Seek to reduce peak car journeys by 30% and
double those by bus, cycle or foot.
- Aim to reduce commuting by ensuring that more
than 80% of peak morning journeys are contained within the Stevenage
area
- Reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over two
tonnes per household per year by subsidising ‘green energy’
supplies
- 75% of all timber used in construction to come
from sustainable managed forests or recycled resources
- Reduce water consumption per household by 30%
- Achieve 40% waste recycling/composting
- New schools, local shops, children’s
play areas, sports centre, sports fields, a health centre and emergency
service facilities on site
- Minimise the effect of the new development
on existing surrounding communities.
