URBAN REGENERATION
The West Stevenage development has been designed to assist wider urban regeneration objectives.

Stevenage was Britain’s first new town and the centre, when first built, was seen as a model of best practice. It had the first pedestrianised shopping centre, which attracted multiple retailers and drew in people from surrounding towns.

Stevenage Borough Council and English Partnerships are now working in partnership to regenerate the town centre to bring in new quality retail and leisure development, a transport interchange, homes, offices and community facilities.

The West Stevenage planning applications positively support the regeneration of Stevenage town centre in the following ways:
  • By creating an additional £40 million per annum of potential spending in the town centre, West Stevenage will help to support new retailers and leisure facilities
  • By designing the development so it integrates well and offers easy and convenient access to the town centre
  • Ensuring that facilities at West Stevenage complement and don’t compete with those existing and proposed in the town centre
  • Providing a substantial financial benefit to Stevenage Borough Council through its access land interest in the West Stevenage site.
