West Stevenage is designed to be a ‘leading
edge’ mixed use urban extension to Britain’s first planned
New Town, meeting high standards of sustainability, urban design and affordability.
The proposals will provide a full range of community
facilities, while promoting urban regeneration in Stevenage and assisting
the Government’s objective of a ‘step change’ in the
delivery of new housing in the East of England Region. |

- Up to 1,350 high quality ‘affordable’
homes with a full range of private housing
- 17 key sustainability targets including:
reduced CO2 emissions; fewer peak hour car journeys; less out-commuting;
use of recycled materials; reduced water usage; and waste reduction
measures
- £40 million per annum additional
spending in Stevenage town centre, supporting urban regeneration and
helping to secure a new anchor department store for the town
- Attractive design of interlinked
urban villages, each with their own facilities and set within extensive
landscaping
- High density development, averaging
37 dwelling per hectare, helping to make the best use of scarce land
and encouraging walking/cycling
- Funding for public transport with
dedicated bus routes, cycle, bridleway and footpath links, and off-site
highway improvements
- Three new primary schools and a
new secondary school, sports hall and pitches, playing fields, open
space, managed business units, local shops including convenience stores,
health, youth, emergency service and other community facilities phased
with the housing development
- Sites for employment land, a health
centre, religious facilities and a cemetery
- Measures to encourage ‘green’
energy, energy efficiency and ecological enhancement.
